Lucas Foglia A Natural Order One, One Thousand Southern Photography

A Natural Order He first focused on a series of photographs called A Natural Order. He made this series during his five years of visiting a network of remote communities. Those communities decided to abandon urban areas of the U.S. and live off the grid. His photos tell the interesting yet at times contradictory stories of these people's lives.

Beginning in 2006, photographer Lucas Foglia spent four years photographing people who chose to reject modern urban living, opting instead for an "off the grid" lifestyle in rural communities.

The Bell Gallery is housed in the List Art Center, a multi-functional building that also includes classrooms, lecture halls and extensive studio space. Designed by internationally renowned architect Philip Johnson, the Center is located on the crest of College Hill, in close proximity to the RISD Museum and downtown Providence. The triangular jags of the roof line — with skylights installed.

Now based in San Francisco, Lucas Foglia is a graduate of the Yale University MFA photography program. Nazraeli Press published his first three monographs, A Natural Order (2012), Frontcountry (2014), and Human Nature (2017), to critical acclaim at home and abroad.

Raised on a small family farm in Long Island, Foglia's respect for the human bond with the land has colored his work to date. In two series included in the exhibition—A Natural Order, 2006-2010, and his current series Frontcountry—Foglia has searched out people who have reinstated or retained their connection to the land as source of food, shelter, and sustenance.

Lucas Foglia exhibits and publishes his photographs internationally. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Pilara Foundation and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Fine Art, and has been published in Aperture Magazine, the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post Magazine, British Journal.
